Scenic Production

The 1220 Scenic Department consists of a talented group of in-house artists with over 50 years of combined experience creating exhibits and environments for museums, zoos, aquariums, amusement parks, resorts, and casinos.

Using a wide variety of materials and working from reference images, renderings, or artifacts — the team can bring to life anything our clients can imagine. From the tiniest model of an insect, to a large immersive diorama of a Pacific Island Jungle, our Scenic Team can create anything you bring to them.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

1220’s Scenic Team brainstorms and develops a strategy to achieve a durable and high-quality artistic interpretation of design intent. Pre-production concept drawings, sketches and/or illustrations are often used to communicate the overall intent and allow the project team to see the result more clearly and gain approval of the proof of concept. The 1220 Scenic Team offers their interpretation and expertise on all aspects of the project such as prop and material selection, paint color and tone variations, distressing or aging of a piece, and arrangement and composition.

MODELS AND PROTOYPES

Often, a scenic concept best takes shape by creating a small-scale 3D model or working prototype of a portion of the proposed exhibit. A detailed model offers an excellent visual representation of the exhibit area from all points of view. In addition, partial full-scale models are sometimes created to prove a concept and/or sample a specific finish or fabrication method.

SCULPTING AND MODEL MAKING

1220 can create or recreate about anything imaginable, in any size, from any combination of materials. Using reference images and artifacts for inspiration, 1220’s Scenic Artists create models and props ranging from exact representations and portrait sculptures to stylized interpretations in a variety of artistic styles.

LIFE AND STATIC CASTING

Artists create custom casts by fabricating reusable molds. When casting from live figures, 1220 carefully selects models that ensure the essence of the design intent is captured. A 1220 Artist hand sculpts the final features to ensure every detail is accurate, down to strands of hair and eye shape. Clothing and props, like hard coat originals, can also be sculpted or the figures can be dressed in artifacts.

SCENIC AND FAUX PAINTING

The 1220 Scenic Team applies the magic that brings any exhibit area or museum diorama to life. The Artists transform ordinary construction materials by using a seemingly endless array of polish, shadow, aging and distressed paint techniques. Scenic and/or faux painting is the final touch that brings the scene together and makes a recreated environment highly realistic and believable.
