New Dr. Martin Luther King Museum Exhibit Unveiled
1220 completes 12,000 square foot museum in Memphis

1220 recently completed fabrication and installation of exhibits designed by Ralph Appelbaum & Associates for the expansion of the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, Tennessee. Unveiled September 28, the 12,000 square foot exhibit tells the story of the search for the killer of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and is located in the building from which the shots were allegedly fired. This building is also part of a new historic project underway in Memphis.

Museum Director Beverly Robertson was delighted with the exhibits and has plans to add to the exhibit in the future stating, “I think the museum will be an ever evolving site of history.”

The new exhibit “Exploring the Legacy” connects with the existing museum via a tunnel across the street into the renovated 3-floor building. Quotes from world leaders and members of the King family are displayed on LED boards under documentary photographs and audio from of Dr. King’s memorial services.

Large-scale graphics, video and silk -screened text lead the visitor through the series of events. A feature display case highlights the State’s evidence, including the alleged murder weapon and bullet fragments removed from the slain civil rights leader.

A mini-theater provides context and insight to Dr King’s work and also explores other civil rights struggles. The second floor boasts a replica of the white Ford Mustang that was used as a “get-away” car. Visitors can walk past the room rented by James Earl Ray and the communal bathroom window from which the shot was fired. Large graphic and text panels provide information on the multiple theories surrounding this event and enable the visitor to draw his or her own conclusion.

This project represents the twenty-fifth museum project completed by 1220 in the past four years and is one of three projects currently under development in Memphis by 1220.
